Children’s Dentistry
Your child deserves the best start to their oral health journey
The team at Wickham Dental Carseldine are always happy to care for your children’s dental health. By starting your children’s dental journey early, we aim to help them build good oral hygiene habits that will serve them well into the future.
It is amazing to hear how often dental phobias arise from a very young age. So we will do our best to ensure your child’s visits to the dentist are enjoyable, short, and positive.
Our goal is to help your children become relaxed and confident about their visits to the dentist.

FREE dental checkups for all pre-school children
The ideal time for your child’s first dentist visit at Wickham Dental Carseldine is around their first birthday, or when their teeth begin to erupt (whichever comes first).
At this short first visit in our Carseldine dental practice, our dentist will gently check your child’s teeth for early signs of decay, and assess your child’s face and jaws for any signs of misalignment. We’ll also be happy to help with tips and advice for improving your kids’ dental health, from brushing technique to diet advice.
To create a positive feeling for your child about visiting the dentist, we’ll be careful to take a patient, gentle approach. We think your kids’ relationship with the dentist really can be comfortable, enjoyable and fun!
Up to $1K free dental treatment with the CDBS
The Child Dental Benefit Schedule (CDBS) is a government scheme that entitles eligible children to up to $1,000 worth of dental treatment over 2 years. Find out more here.
Children’s dentistry FAQs
What age should I bring my child to see a children’s dentist?
As soon as your child has teeth, we invite you to bring them in to visit us. Even if we don’t have a look inside their mouth, this gives us a chance to start building a positive relationship with your child – as well as give them a fun and enjoyable first experience!
How often should my child visit a children’s dentist?
We recommend children visit us every 6 months so we can:
- Maintain a healthy mouth
- Prevent dental issues before they develop, and
- Build on their positive experiences.
How should I prepare my child for a dental visit?
Don’t talk about any potentially scary details such as needles, fillings and the like. The more information children have, the more they worry! Instead, keep information to a minimum and allow our team to use their years of experience to create a positive experience.
What’s the best time for a child’s dental appointment?
We find that morning visits are generally the best time, as children are more alert and therefore more cooperative at this time of the day. It also gives them less time to think (and worry!) about their visit to the dentist throughout the day.
How long will my children’s dentist visit take?
We like to keep your child’s appointments to around 15 to 30 minutes. If the procedure required is longer than this, we may ask you to return for a second visit to ensure they are cooperative and can actually enjoy the experience of visiting the dentist.
