Carseldine dentistry with the Child Dental Benefits Schedule
How we care for your kids’ dental health through the CDBS
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a government scheme that entitles eligible children to up to $1,000 worth of dental treatment over 2 years.
Your child’s eligibility for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule is assessed by the Department of Human Services. A child is eligible if they are aged between 2-17 years, and receive a relevant Australian government payment, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A or B, or have a disability.
In most cases the Department of Human Resources will send out a letter informing you of your child’s eligibility. If you are unsure if your child meets the criteria, you can contact Medicare or Centrelink.
What dental treatments are covered under the CDBS?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule includes:
- Examinations
- X-rays
- Cleaning
- Fissure sealing
- Fillings
- Root canal treatment
- Extractions, and even
- Partial dentures.
How does the Child Dental Benefit Schedule (CDBS) work?
Your eligible child is entitled to up to $1,000 of dental treatment over two consecutive calendar years. Your child may use up this benefit within the first year, or if there are unused benefits funds, your child may be able to use the balance the following year if they are still eligible.
Any balance remaining after the relevant two year period will be lost. As long as the Australian Government continues with this scheme, a new benefit cap will then become available and another $1,000 will be granted to children who are eligible for the scheme.
Note that a patient’s benefit cap can be used for eligible services provided to that patient only. Family members cannot share their entitlements.
Once your child reaches their benefit cap of $1,000, no further government benefits are payable. This means that if they require further dental treatment, there may be out-of-pocket expenses.
How to get started with the CDBS
Call us at Wickham Dental Carseldine on 07 3863 3604 to make a time for your child’s first appointment. Bring in your letter of confirmation. If you do not have a letter, our team can contact the Department of Human Services to confirm your child’s eligibility.
We’ll carry out a thorough examination of your child’s teeth and mouth, then:
- Provide you with a treatment plan detailing the costs of treatment.
- Obtain your signed consent to make sure you understand the treatment plan and its value.
- Provide Bulk Billed dental treatment for your child. If their CDBS limit has been reached, we’ll let you know if further out-of-pocket expenses are required.
