What are dental crowns?
A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that covers and strengthens a damaged tooth. Designed to provide comfort, durability, stability and a natural appearance, crowns protect teeth weakened by decay, tooth wear, large fillings or cracks.
Crowns can be made from different materials, including:
- Zirconia: Offers a natural-looking result while maintaining excellent strength and fracture resistance. Especially useful towards the back of the mouth or in people with a very heavy bite.
- E.Max: Superb aesthetics while maintaining very good strength. E.max and zirconia are often hand layered with porcelain for the ultimate aesthetics in the smile zone.
- Gold: Known for its durability and longevity while requiring minimal tooth preparation. Often still considered the “Gold Standard” in cases where there is very little tooth structure remaining in the back of the mouth.
By encasing the entire visible portion of a tooth, crowns eliminate the risk of further cracking or deterioration, providing long-term protection and function. Towards the back of the mouth we can often do incredibly minimally invasive crowns thanks to the advances in adhesive dentistry.

Why might you need a dental crown?
A dental crown may be recommended if you have:
- A cracked or fractured tooth
- A tooth with a large filling that is at risk of breaking
- A weakened tooth due to decay or root canal treatment
- A discoloured or misshapen tooth requiring aesthetic enhancement
- A dental implant that needs capping for a natural appearance
- Teeth that have been worn down due to grinding or acid erosion
Why choose a dental crown?
A dental crown is an excellent solution for protecting and restoring damaged teeth. It provides strength and durability, reinforcing the structural integrity of a weakened tooth while ensuring a long-lasting restoration.
Designed to match the natural colour and shape of your teeth, a crown enhances the appearance of your smile, making it an ideal option for aesthetic improvement if veneers cannot be used. By encasing the entire tooth, it offers protection against further damage, preventing cracking, decay, or deterioration.
Unlike fillings or provisional solutions, a crown restores normal function, allowing you to chew and speak comfortably. If your tooth is weakened, cracked, or requires aesthetic enhancement, a dental crown may be the ideal treatment option.
The benefits of dental crowns
- Restores strength & function: Reinforces weakened teeth, allowing for normal biting and chewing.
- Enhances aesthetics: Matches the natural colour and shape of your teeth for a seamless smile.
- Prevents further damage: Protects teeth from cracks, decay, and wear.
- Long-lasting solution: With proper care, crowns can often last over a decade and many last several decades.
- Custom fit: Designed specifically for your bite and smile, ensuring comfort, aesthetics and durability.
Is getting a dental crown painful?
Getting a dental crown is a minimally invasive procedure, and local anaesthesia is used to numb the tooth, so you won’t feel any pain during the preparation or fitting.
Some patients may experience slight sensitivity or mild discomfort after the anaesthesia wears off, but this is temporary and typically resolves within a few days.
Our team takes extra care to ensure your comfort throughout the process.

What’s the difference between a crown, veneer, bridge and an implant?
Dental crowns: A dental crown is used when a single tooth is badly damaged or weakened but still has its natural root. The crown acts as a protective cap in the ideal shape for that tooth. This reinforces the tooth’s structure and rehabilitates its appearance and function.
Dental veneers: are highly aesthetic and minimally-invasive restorations that are bonded to the facial surfaces of the teeth. With modern materials and adhesive protocols these can be made incredibly thin while maintaining impressive strength. They may not be suitable in teeth that are very crowded, heavily-restored or in a very heavy bite.
Dental bridges: A dental bridge is an option for replacing a missing tooth. A bridge usually consists of two crowns attached to neighbouring teeth with an artificial tooth (pontic) in between. This is employed when both of the neighbouring teeth are already in need of a crown and if there is insufficient bone to place an implant. A variation on a conventional bridge is a resin-bonded bridge, typically used to replace a missing front tooth. The pontic is bonded to a single adjacent tooth by a wing on the non-visible side. This is a highly aesthetic and minimally-invasive option if the bite is suitable.
Dental implants: A dental implant is another option for replacing a missing tooth. Unlike bridges, implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support. Instead, a titanium post is surgically placed into the jawbone, acting as an artificial root, with a crown attached on top. This is usually the preferred option to replace a missing tooth if the site is suitable.
Our experienced dentists will assess your needs and determine which is the best option for your smile.
The dental crown process at Wickham Dental Carseldine
Getting a dental crown can involve two or three appointments:
Initial consultation – Usually a tooth must be assessed clinically and with an x-ray before allocating the time needed to complete a crown.
Crown preparation – Just enough tooth structure is removed to allow for an optimally-designed ceramic restoration. The tooth is sealed and an ultra-high resolution digital scan is taken. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth and prevent discomfort while the permanent one is being made in our dedicated Spring Hill dental laboratory.
Final crown placement – Once your custom-made crown is ready, we securely bond it to your tooth, ensuring a perfect fit and natural look.
We use advanced dental technology and high-quality Australian-made crowns to provide you with the best possible care.
